Tyranids are the adaptive swarm army, and one of the most internally varied factions in the game. A Tyranid list can be a genuine horde of cheap gaunts, a small force of enormous monsters, or a mix — and these play so differently that Tyranid advice from another player may not apply to your list at all.
The synapse system is the connective tissue. Units near a synapse creature function properly; units cut off from it degrade. That gives the army a positional structure that most horde forces lack, and it makes your synapse creatures priority targets for both players.
The army excels at applying pressure everywhere at once. Between fast gaunts, burrowing units and monsters, Tyranids can threaten more of the table simultaneously than most factions.
Decide swarm, monsters, or a deliberate mix. All three work, but they want different detachments and different play, and drifting between them produces a list with no plan.
Protect synapse. A list with two synapse creatures is a list that stops working when your opponent kills two things.
If you are new to Tyranids: Map your synapse coverage during deployment. Tyranid players lose units to a rule they forgot was conditional far more often than to enemy shooting.
Swarm tactics with powerful monsters. Tyranids use synapse to coordinate their forces and can overwhelm enemies with endless waves of bio-organisms.
