Terms of Service

The ground rules for using GrimSlate, written for humans as well as lawyers.

Updated 17 July 2026

The short version

Use GrimSlate lawfully and respectfully. Your lists remain yours. Community posts may be moderated. The service and game data can change and should not replace official rules.

1. Agreement and eligibility

These Terms form an agreement between you and the operator of GrimSlate when you access the website, install the progressive web app, create an account, or use its features. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

You must be legally able to accept these Terms. If you are under the age at which you can consent on your own where you live, a parent or legal guardian must authorise your use. The service is not directed to children under 14.

Our Privacy Policy explains how personal data is handled, and the Disclaimer explains the project's relationship to Games Workshop and third-party game data.

2. What GrimSlate provides

GrimSlate is an independent web application for browsing reference data, building Warhammer 40,000 rosters, sharing public lists, and supporting games with tools such as datasheets, validation, exports, battle tracking, and combat estimates.

  • Core roster data is stored locally in your browser so key features can work without an account.
  • Creating an account enables cloud sync and community features such as profiles, follows, favourites, comments, and public rosters.
  • Some features require a network connection, a supported browser, or third-party infrastructure.
  • The service is currently provided without a mandatory fee. Voluntary support through external platforms does not purchase ownership, influence, or guaranteed features.

3. Accounts and security

  • Provide accurate information and keep your sign-in method secure.
  • You are responsible for activity performed through your account unless caused by our failure to use reasonable security measures.
  • Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.
  • Usernames, display names, avatars, and bios must not impersonate others, infringe rights, or contain unlawful or abusive material.

You may request account deletion by contacting command@grimslate.com. Browser-only data must be cleared on each device by you.

4. Your content and community features

You keep any rights you hold in roster names, descriptions, comments, feedback, profile details, and other content you submit. You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce, format, display, transmit, and back up that content only as needed to operate, secure, and improve the service. This licence ends when the content is deleted, except for reasonable backups, legal obligations, and content already shared by others.

Public means public

Rosters or profiles marked public, plus comments and other community activity, may be visible to anyone and indexed by search engines. Do not publish personal, confidential, or rights-infringing material.

We may remove, restrict, or preserve content where reasonably necessary to enforce these Terms, protect users, investigate reports, comply with law, or maintain the service. Reports do not guarantee removal, and moderation decisions may take context into account.

5. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • Break applicable law or infringe intellectual property, privacy, publicity, or other rights.
  • Harass, threaten, deceive, impersonate, spam, or publish malicious or illegal material.
  • Probe, bypass, disable, or interfere with authentication, security, rate limits, access controls, or service infrastructure.
  • Upload malware or use the service to facilitate attacks or unauthorised access.
  • Scrape or automate access in a way that degrades the service, circumvents controls, or republishes protected datasets without permission.
  • Use GrimSlate branding or presentation to suggest official endorsement by GrimSlate, Games Workshop, or another rights holder.

6. Intellectual property

The GrimSlate name, original interface, code, and original written or visual material are owned by their respective creator or licensors. These Terms give you only the limited right to use the service; they do not transfer ownership.

Warhammer 40,000 names, rules, artwork, logos, and related intellectual property belong to Games Workshop and/or its licensors. Community datasets and software may have their own licences and attribution requirements. Nothing on this site grants a licence to third-party intellectual property. See the full attribution and rights notice.

7. Changes, availability, and data

We may add, change, limit, suspend, or discontinue features to maintain security, comply with law, respond to third-party rights, or evolve the project. We will use reasonable efforts to communicate material changes when practical.

  • Keep your own exports or backups of important rosters.
  • Local browser storage can be erased by browser settings, device loss, private browsing, or storage cleanup.
  • Cloud sync reduces but does not eliminate the risk of loss, conflict, or temporary unavailability.

8. Service and game-data disclaimers

Provided as available

To the extent permitted by law, the service is provided “as is” and “as available”. We do not promise uninterrupted operation, complete security, compatibility with every device, or that every rule, points value, validation result, export, or calculation is accurate or current.

Always check current official Games Workshop publications and the rules of your event. GrimSlate is a convenience tool, not an official rules source or tournament authority.

9. Limitation of liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded, including mandatory consumer rights. Subject to that, GrimSlate's operator will not be liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of data, loss of opportunity, or losses caused by reliance on unofficial game data, service interruptions, or third-party services.

Because the service is currently supplied without a mandatory fee, any liability that may lawfully be limited will be limited to the greater of the amount you paid directly for the affected service during the previous 12 months or €50. This cap does not apply where prohibited by law.

10. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access where reasonably necessary for a serious or repeated breach, security risk, legal requirement, rights-holder request, or threat to other users or the service. Where appropriate, we will provide notice and an opportunity to address the issue.

Provisions that logically survive termination—including intellectual property, disclaimers, liability limits, and dispute terms—remain effective.

11. Changes, governing law, and contact

These Terms are governed by Spanish law. If you are a consumer, this choice does not remove mandatory protections granted by the law of your country, and disputes may be brought before the courts competent under applicable consumer law. Otherwise, courts in Spain will have jurisdiction to the extent legally permitted.

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be highlighted on the site or, where appropriate, sent to registered users before taking effect. Continued use after the effective date means the revised Terms apply.
