Space Wolves are a melee-leaning Space Marine chapter with an unusually deep character roster and a set of units nobody else has — Wulfen, Thunderwolf Cavalry, Blood Claws. The army fights at close range and its characters do a disproportionate share of the work, which makes attachment decisions more important here than in most Marine lists.
Where Blood Angels are about the alpha charge, Space Wolves are about sustained close-range pressure. Thunderwolf Cavalry in particular are fast, durable and hit hard, which is a rare combination and the reason many lists are built around them.
The chapter also has one of the game's more distinctive detachment sets, including Saga-based rules that reward achieving specific objectives during the battle.
Space Wolves get more out of the Leader and Support character slots than most chapters, because the character roster is deep and the buffs are strong. Filling both slots on your main melee unit is usually correct.
Watch out for Precision. The Epic Challenge Core stratagem lets an opponent allocate melee attacks directly to your attached characters — a character-heavy army is a character-sniping target.
If you are new to Space Wolves: Attach characters to units that will survive to turn three. A Space Wolves character on a squad that dies on turn two is a large points investment that did nothing.
