Deathwatch are the Imperium's xenos specialists — a chapter assembled from every other chapter, with mixed squads and access to a wider array of specialist wargear than any other Marine force. The army is built around flexibility at the unit level rather than at the list level: individual squads can be configured to handle several different jobs.
That configurability is the whole faction. A Deathwatch player who invests in understanding the wargear options gets units that are precisely tuned to the target in front of them. A player who does not gets an expensive generic Marine squad.
They are also small in model count and expensive per model, so the precision has to earn its cost.
The wargear options are the army. Take the time to configure squads deliberately rather than defaulting to standard loadouts — a Deathwatch squad taken at default settings is a worse, pricier Intercessor squad.
Cover your model count. Elite pricing means Deathwatch lists frequently end up with too few units to play the mission; add cheap bodies before adding another specialist.
If you are new to Deathwatch: Build one squad completely, write down what it is for, and play it three times before configuring the rest of the army. The wargear system rewards understanding one unit deeply.
