Current 40k Meta Tier List - April 2026

The competitive Warhammer 40,000 meta has shifted dramatically since January. With the Q1 2026 Balance Dataslate now in effect and 11th Edition on the horizon, here's where every faction stands heading into the final months of 10th Edition.

Last updated: April 23, 2026

S-Tier: The Meta Dominators

T'au Empire

T'au are the undisputed kings of the current meta. They're posting brutal win rates, strong 4-0 conversion rates, and stacking up event wins that no other faction can match. The combination of devastating ranged firepower and improved mobility options makes them incredibly difficult to counter.

Why they're S-Tier:

Highest tournament win rate in the game
Consistent 4-0 and 5-0 finishes at major events
Excellent into most matchups with few hard counters

Necrons

Necrons aren't far behind, showing the kind of all-around numbers that keep them firmly in the top tier. The C'tan adjustments from the Q1 dataslate were meant to rein them in, but the faction's core strengths remain intact.

Why they're S-Tier:

Strong across all metrics: win rate, event wins, conversion rate
Multiple viable builds and detachment choices
Excellent durability and trading efficiency

A-Tier: Strong Contenders

These factions may not dominate the room, but they punish bad matchups, positioning errors, and unprepared opponents ruthlessly.

Deathwatch - Elite infantry, flexible kill teams
Chaos Space Marines - Versatile builds, strong daemon engines
Imperial Agents - Powerful allies, assassination tools
Drukhari - Speed, damage output, trading power
Chaos Daemons - Board control, summoning flexibility
Adeptus Custodes - Elite durability, character threats
Leagues of Votann - Shooting efficiency, grudge tokens
Imperial Knights - Big threats, mission play

B-Tier: Competitive Middle Ground

Solid armies that can make real runs with tuned lists, good practice, and favorable pairings. They just aren't handing out trophies on autopilot.

Space Marines - Hurt by Calgar/Victrix changes, still versatile
Black Templars - Strong melee, benefits from recent buffs
Tyranids - Monster mash viable, needs good piloting
Adeptus Mechanicus - Skitarii builds work, steep learning curve
Death Guard - Durable but slow, struggles into S-tier
Adepta Sororitas - Miracle dice clutch, matchup dependent

C-Tier: Struggling Factions

These armies face uphill battles in the current meta. Skilled players can still find success, but you're fighting against the tide.

Orks - Waiting for 11th Edition Armageddon box buffs
Dark Angels - Inner Circle builds inconsistent
Blood Angels - Melee struggles into T'au/Necron shooting
World Eaters - Delivery problems, got minor dataslate help
Astra Militarum - Infantry hordes less effective
Grey Knights - Teleport nerfs still hurting
Chaos Knights - Outclassed by Imperial Knights
Thousand Sons - Cabal points don't compensate for fragility
Space Wolves - Saga detachment helps but not enough
Genestealer Cults - Crossfire mechanics underwhelming
Aeldari - Wraith buffs help but not enough to climb

D-Tier: Need Help

Emperor's Children

Emperor's Children are stuck at the bottom, waiting for the next balance pass to throw them a rope. The army lacks the tools to compete with current meta threats and desperately needs attention.

What to Expect Going Forward

With 11th Edition launching in June 2026, Games Workshop has indicated they won't make major balance changes. The next dataslate is expected after the new edition drops, meaning this meta will likely remain stable until then.

Key factors to watch:

11th Edition launch box features Blood Angels vs Orks
70 new detachments coming with the new edition
10th Edition codexes remain valid at launch
